Update from Sir Julian Smith MP on reducing financial pressures for Hospitality Sector
7 Jan 2026
Update follows:
I wanted to update you on the action I have taken in Parliament recently on behalf of hospitality businesses across North Yorkshire.
At Prime Minister’s Questions on 17 December, I raised the urgent need for the Government to review business rates and relax transitional relief for pubs, many of
which are under severe pressure and at risk of closure.
In addition, I have signed a cross-party letter to the Chancellor from the All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group, calling for immediate action on business rates to help
safeguard jobs and the future of our hospitality sector.
Further, on 9 December, I urged the Treasury to look again at business rates relief and multipliers for hospitality more broadly, including restaurants, hotels and cafes, given
that hospitality across Skipton and Ripon is facing mounting financial pressures.
Please be assured that I will keep pressing this issue and keep you informed of any developments.
Thank you for everything you do for our community, and I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Yours sincerely,
Rt Hon Sir Julian Smith KCB CBE MP
