Get Online Week | 19–25 October 2026
From accessing healthcare and managing finances to keeping in touch with loved ones, so much of everyday life now takes place online. But what happens when you don’t have the skills, confidence, equipment or support to get connected?
This Get Online Week, MCO is working closely with Good Things Foundation and North Yorkshire Council to raise awareness of digital exclusion and help more people access the skills and support they need to participate in our increasingly digital world.
Digital exclusion: a growing challenge
Being digitally excluded isn’t always as simple as being online or offline. Many people use the internet regularly but still face barriers, whether that’s struggling to use certain websites, feeling unsure about online safety, accessing digital services or knowing how to make the most of their devices.
For others, a lack of access to suitable equipment, reliable connectivity or someone to turn to for help can make everyday tasks more difficult.
From booking GP appointments and ordering prescriptions to applying for benefits, accessing information and staying connected with family and friends, digital skills are increasingly important for maintaining independence and wellbeing.
Without the right support, these everyday activities can become stressful, time-consuming and sometimes impossible.
That’s why digital inclusion matters. Everyone should have the opportunity to develop the skills and confidence they need to access online services safely and independently, whatever their age or level of experience.
Meet our Digital Champions
At MCO, our Digital Champions help local residents build their digital skills, overcome challenges and feel more confident using technology.
Whether you’re just starting out or have a specific problem you’d like help with, our friendly team can offer practical, patient support tailored to your needs.
You don’t need to be an expert, and you certainly don’t need to feel embarrassed about asking for help. Technology changes all the time, and it’s perfectly normal to need a little guidance.
Our Digital Champions can help with a range of everyday digital tasks, including getting to grips with your smartphone, tablet or computer, navigating websites, using online services and learning how to make the most of useful apps.
The aim isn’t simply to get you online. It’s to help you feel more confident, capable and independent, so you can use technology in ways that make life easier.
Making a real difference in our community
The need for digital support across Mashamshire continues to grow, and our Digital Champions are making a significant difference to local people.
During the 2025–26, from 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026, MCO received:
– 535 digital support enquiries from people looking for advice and assistance.
– 212 individuals who received direct support from our digital team.
– 239 hours of digital support, a 92% increase on the previous year.
– 43 home visits, providing 121 instances of support.
– 70 digital drop-in clinics delivered throughout the year.
These figures highlight just how important this service has become and the demand isn’t slowing down. Since April 2026, our figures suggest that the need for digital support is on track to increase again this year.
We’d like to say a huge thank you to our Digital Champions for the time, patience and encouragement they give to people across our community.
