Not all disabilities are visible. Hidden disabilities can include learning difficulties, mental health conditions, autism, dementia, chronic pain, hearing or sight impairments, anxiety, mobility issues and many other conditions that may not be immediately obvious.
To help create a more inclusive and understanding environment, all North Yorkshire Libraries support the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Scheme.
The scheme provides a simple, discreet way for people with hidden disabilities to let others know they may need a little extra time, patience or assistance. People can choose to wear a Sunflower lanyard, wristband or carry an ID card to indicate that they may benefit from additional support.
Sunflower materials are available free of charge from Mashamshire Community Library, with no qualifying list of conditions. Anyone who feels they would benefit from wearing a Sunflower product is welcome to collect one.
The scheme has also introduced Sunflower Extra, a new digital version of the traditional Sunflower Card. Sunflower wearers can present their digital card and, with a simple tap on an NFC-enabled smartphone, open a personalised support page explaining how they would like to be assisted. It works on most smartphones without the need to download an app, and users remain in complete control of the information they choose to share.
It is estimated that up to 80% of disabilities are not immediately visible. By supporting the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Scheme and Sunflower Extra, libraries are helping to create welcoming, inclusive spaces where everyone feels seen, supported and valued.
