Mind In Harrogate District – The Befriending Service

22 Jul 2026

Using the Service

Human connection plays an important role in maintaining good mental wellbeing. Mind’s Befriending Service offers regular one-to-one support from a trained volunteer, providing friendship, encouragement and someone to talk to.

Once registered, you’ll be carefully matched with a volunteer befriender based on your interests and needs. Your first meeting is a supervised introduction to ensure you’re both comfortable, before moving on to regular meet-ups. Activities might include a walk, visiting a café, going shopping or simply enjoying a chat together in a public place.

If you think the service could benefit you or someone you know, get in touch by emailing befriending@mindinharrogate.org.uk or calling 01423 503335.

Making a Referral

If you know someone who may benefit from extra companionship and support, Mind’s Befriending Service welcomes referrals for adults experiencing loneliness and isolation and challenges with their mental health.

To find out more or make a referral, contact the Befriending Team by emailing befriending@mindinharrogate.org.uk or calling 01423 503335. A Befriending Co-ordinator can arrange to meet individuals in Masham or Ripon to discuss the service and complete the registration process.

Volunteering Opportunities

Could you spare a little time to make a big difference? Mind’s Befriending Service is looking for volunteers to provide companionship and a listening ear to people experiencing mental health challenges.

As a Befriender Volunteer, you will help to reduce loneliness, build confidence and improve wellbeing through friendly conversation and shared activities. Whether it’s a walk, a coffee or simply spending time together in a public location, your support can have a lasting impact.

Volunteers receive comprehensive training, including safeguarding and active listening skills, ongoing support, quarterly volunteer forums and access to a confidential wellbeing helpline. It’s a rewarding opportunity to gain valuable experience while making a genuine difference in someone’s life.
