Since launching at the beginning of April, our Volunteer Community Transport service has gone from strength to strength. We are welcoming new members every week, have already completed more than 52 journeys, and continue to recruit volunteer drivers to support the growing demand for the scheme.
This week, we received some wonderful feedback from a local member whose wife regularly uses the service to attend essential healthcare appointments in York. Here’s what they had to say:
“You’ve recently organised volunteer drivers to take my wife to York Hospital for a series of eye operations.
The most recent journey was this past Wednesday, 13 May. This was for her fourth, and hopefully last, operation.
Without your drivers, we would have been lost. Not only did they ensure we got to York on time, they waited for us where possible and, if not, were happy to drive out from Masham to pick us up.
Our most recent trip, this week, involved a 12-hour day from pick up to arrival back home. Chris (on this occasion) not only took us to York first thing, he spent the day nearby and was waiting for us downstairs inside the hospital when my wife was finally discharged at about 5 o’clock. Talk about above and beyond!
All our drivers – Gaynor, Alan, Simon and Chris – have been fabulous. We can’t thank them enough, and they helped make what was a difficult time so much easier.
I know, too, that without all the hard work and care everyone in the office puts into this service, it wouldn’t run as smoothly. It really is a team effort, and you’re such a friendly and helpful first point of contact.
My wife does have at least one more appointment in York (in about 3 weeks’ time) and, as she still won’t be able to drive (and, unfortunately, I don’t), we’ll be pestering you again – and hoping someone is available. We don’t have a date yet but I’ll contact you once I know and keep my fingers crossed.
At the risk of sounding like a broken record, we can’t thank everyone enough.
But thank you we do. It’s an amazing service, and we are so lucky to have you all.”
