Did you know that too much screen time before bed could be stopping your child from getting the good night’s sleep they need?
A recent study, picked up by national news, has found that around 75% of children who use screens right before bed struggle with sleep disruption.
Experts say it’s not just the blue light from devices that delays the body’s natural sleep hormone, melatonin — it’s also the stimulating content. Whether it’s games, videos, or social media, screens keep young minds wired when they should be winding down.
Poor sleep can lead to tired, irritable mornings, trouble focusing at school and increased stress and anxiety. But here’s the good news: small changes to your family’s evening routine can make a big difference to your child’s mental health and wellbeing.
Tips for Parents:
• Set a “digital sunset” — switch off screens at least an hour before bedtime.
• Create a bedtime routine — dim the lights, read a book, or listen to calming music.
• Make bedrooms screen-free — keep devices out of sleeping spaces.
• Encourage reading for pleasure — it’s relaxing and sparks the imagination.
A Better Alternative: The Power of Reading
Reading together is one of the best ways to calm busy minds before bed. It helps children relax naturally, strengthens parent-child bonds, and sparks the imagination in a screen-free way. Research shows that children who are read to regularly develop better focus and coping skills, giving them tools for good mental health later in life.
Books for Juniors & Pre-Teens
We’re keen to encourage families to read more, especially with Juniors and Pre-Teens. Teenagers can be especially tricky to lure away from screens, but it’s worth it! Try letting them choose books that match their interests — from graphic novels and sports biographies to fantasy epics or books linked to their favourite shows or hobbies. Reading alongside friends, joining a reading challenge, or even setting up a cosy reading space at home can also help make reading feel like a treat, not a chore.
