Farm Equipment & Fuel Theft
North Yorkshire Police has seen an increase in rural crime, particularly thefts involving farm machinery, plant equipment, and quad bikes.
There is also growing concern over fuel theft due to the rising costs. Criminals have been targeting insecure fuel tanks, with some offenders even drilling into tractor tanks, causing significant damage, far beyond the loss of fuel.
Residents and farmers are encouraged to:
- Secure machinery inside locked outbuildings wherever possible
- Keep all gateways locked on a night
- Install alarms, CCTV and security lighting
- Consider fuel tank alarms that monitor fuel levels and alert owners to sudden drops
These devices are widely available online, and local companies such as Northern Tank Services are able to assist with sourcing and installing these across our area.
North Yorkshire Police can provide free on-site security assessments tailored to your property and needs. To arrange this, please contact: harrogate.outer@northyorkshire.police.uk
The North East experienced £7.1 million in rural crime costs during 2024, making it one of the worst affected regions in the country. Further support and advice can also be found through Neighbourhood Watch.
Door-to-Door Sales & Rogue Traders
A recent incident in Pateley Bridge involved a young lady going door-to-door, where force was reportedly used to gain entry to a property and money was subsequently taken.
We have also seen an increase in households being targeted by individuals or companies offering services such as:
• Gardening work
• Home repairs
• Driveway maintenance
• Roofing and property maintenance
These approaches may happen at your door, over the phone, or online through websites and social media. Elderly and vulnerable residents are often specifically targeted.
Please be cautious of traders who:
• Offer very cheap quotes initially, then increase prices later
• Claim work is urgently needed when it may not be
• Ask for upfront cash payments
• Pressure you into making quick decisions
• Leave work unfinished or complete work to a poor standard
If something does not feel right, trust your instincts and avoid agreeing to work immediately. It is always advisable to:
• Obtain 2–3 quotes from trusted tradespeople
• Speak with friends, neighbours, or family for tradespeople recommendations
• Verify company details before making payments
Fraud can also be reported to Action Fraud online via the official website or by calling 0300 123 2040. For more guidance, please read the information provided by North Yorkshire Police and Gov.uk
