Government Updates on Business Rates and Hospitality Support

29 Jan 2026

Sir Julian Smith provides an update from Government regarding the support for pubs and live music venues, as part of the 2026–27 business rates changes.

According to the Government’s recent announcements, from April 2026, all eligible pubs and live music venues will receive a 15% business rates relief, which will be applied in addition to any existing reliefs you may qualify for, such as Transitional Relief or Supporting Small Business Relief.

Following this, business rates bills for qualifying venues will be frozen in real terms for 2027–28 and 2028–29.

To qualify, pubs must be open to the public, allow free entry (except for occasional
entertainment), allow drinking without requiring food, and permit drinks to be bought
at a bar. Live music venues must be used wholly or mainly for live music performances, with any other activities only ancillary.

Local authorities will assess cases where eligibility is unclear.

This does not go far enough, and I will continue to lobby the Government on behalf of the hospitality industry and our high streets to ensure support is provided to those businesses that need it.
