Small Charities Week is a national celebration of the vital role that small charities play in communities across the UK. Recent research shows that, after family members, small charities are Britain’s second most trusted source of support and that is what drives us to continue serving our community every day.
At a time when funding continues to decline, the need for local support is rapidly growing. In the first five months of this year alone, the Community Office has seen a 12% increase in enquiries and a 10% rise in the number of people supported compared with the same period last year. These figures highlight just how important accessible, local services remains for people across Mashamshire.
As a small charity, much of the work we do happens quietly behind the scenes. Small Charities Week provides an opportunity to shine a light on the difference we make and the role we play in helping people to stay connected, informed, and supported.
Our Community Transport Programme, launched in April, has already provided more than 90 essential journeys to healthcare appointments for local residents, helping people access the care they need when transport might otherwise be a barrier. We have also delivered over 230 digital support sessions, including a new weekly drop-in at the Kings Head Hotel every Thursday morning, helping residents build confidence, stay safe and connected in an increasingly digital world.
The demand for information also continues to grow. Library visits have increased by 17%, while more residents and visitors are turning to us for guidance on local events, attractions, businesses, services, and walking routes. Every conversation, enquiry, and visit represents an opportunity to help someone and promote some of the fantastic things happening across the region.
Supporting local businesses is also an important part of our work. Through our newsletters and social media channels, we regularly champion local enterprises and share information that helps residents, visitors, and businesses stay connected and informed.
Behind every statistic is a person who needed help, advice, reassurance, or practical support. We know that many people rely on the services we provide, and despite the challenges facing the charity sector and MCO right now, we remain committed to being there for those who need us most.
As we mark Small Charities Week, we would like to thank everyone who supports MCO, our volunteers, Trustees, funders, local businesses, and community members. Your support enables us to continue providing vital services and responding to growing demand across Mashamshire.
