On 25th September, our team from Mashamshire Community Office (MCO) spent the day at the Sir Robert Ogden Centre in Harrogate with the Macmillan Cancer Support team. It was a valuable opportunity to learn more about how people’s lives are affected as they live with cancer, and the challenges they face.
We were also able to share with patients and staff what we do locally here in Mashamshire – from promoting activities, social groups and events that help people feel connected to advocating for better transport access across our area. Often when people don’t know where to turn, they come to MCO, and we will always do what we can to help. Our volunteers, who live and work right here in the community, see first-hand what people need.
By strengthening relationships with organisations like Macmillan and the NHS, we can connect residents to the right services more quickly, ensure local voices are heard, and ultimately improve wellbeing in our community.
This kind of partnership working has grown since Covid, when volunteers stepped up to support neighbours and built lasting connections with both residents and service providers. Now, as local councils come together under the new North Yorkshire Council, it’s more important than ever to have grassroots organisations like MCO feeding back what’s happening on the ground.
The visit reminded us that while no single organisation has all the answers, working together makes a real difference. Whether it’s the NHS, Macmillan or local groups here in Mashamshire, it’s the partnerships between us that ensure our community feels cared for, connected, and confident about where to turn when they need help.
Need support? Our friendly team can provide a listening ear and advice or connect you with a partner service that can help. Please call 01765 680200 or pop into the Community Office on Little Market Place, Masham – we’re open Mon-Sat 10am-3pm.
