Artists & Makers at Masham Flock

3 Jul 2025

Artists and makers living in the Dales exhibit their work at Flock gallery @ Mashamshire Community Hub. It is a little gem, displaying the varied work of a selection of artists from “Fleece”,  a not-for-profit artists’ cooperative in Reeth.

The displays are ever changing and all work is for sale.  It’s the perfect place to find unique handmade gifts rooted in the life and scenery of the Dales.  More information about the artists who exhibit can be fond below…

Helen Rhodes

Surrounded by the beauty of her farm, Helen Rhodes crafts each animal sculpture by hand, drawing inspiration from her flock of sheep just outside her studio window.

A lifelong maker, Helen’s creative journey began as a child sculpting animals from clay dug from the fields. Today, she channels that same wonder into every piece, using her deep understanding of animal behaviour to capture personality and charm in clay. Each sculpture is a unique character—full of life, shaped by nature, and made to bring joy. Whether you’re a country lover or an animal enthusiast, Helen’s work offers a heartfelt connection to the countryside, lovingly handcrafted to brighten your home with warmth and whimsy.

Thelma Russell

Thelma is a feltmaker and one of Fleece cooperative’s Founder members. Concerned about environmental issues, Thelma is drawn to feltmaking as it is a way to create beautiful things in a sustainable low-tech way.

Although she was brought up in industrial Teesside, her childhood memories are all about the rural North Riding – fishing for tadpoles, picking bluebells, bird watching, the smell of wild garlic and head-high bracken. Felt is a completely sustainable material, made without machines, and can be composted at the end of its usefulness. Thelma has been making felt fo 20 years and finds it’s still a magical, extraordinary thing to make a strong, durable fabric from a pile of sheep’s wool, using just water, a touch of soap and lots of rubbing and rolling.
