Transport Options

Community Transport Organised by Mashamshire Community Office

Mashamshire Community Office’s community consultation highlighted the fact that the lack of access to transport for our community is a big issue, with far reaching consequences.  We agree and are beginning to explore solutions and alternatives, and will keep you informed as this project progresses.  So watch this space….

In the meantime, here is a summary of current transport options and issues…

Community trips set off from Masham Community Office monthly using volunteer drivers and Heck bus

Mashamshire Community Hub has been working hard to make it easier to get out and about without using a car…

In partnership with ‘Heck’ and their community mini-bus, and with the support of our  wonderful Volunteer Drivers, we have put together a schedule of monthly trips picking up from Masham and the surrounding villages.

These low-cost outings enable people to get over Masham bridge and explore – on your own or with friends.  We aim to cater for a variety of interests, from shopping and garden centres to seaside visits and more adventurous days out.

You can see our current schedule on the events page by clicking below.  Please get in touch if you have a destination to request.

Trips depart from the Masham Market Place at 10am on the last Tuesday of the month – returning at 4pm. Your place must be booked in advance as places are limited.

Trip costs from £8-£15 per trip, depending upon distance.

Why is Transport So Important?

The ability to get out and about is a big deal.

For Over 65’s – Mashamshire has a higher than average over 65 population.  Many of whom need transport to get to health appointments or just get out and about, with limited affordable options available.

For families – Have you ever thought how hard it is for families to live here with such poor transport connections? When 16+ education is compulsory, but transport is so limited?  16+ education in this area are mostly an hour away, but getting there on public transport is not an option and there is no formal provision.

Such difficulties have consequences and impact…

  • If we can’t get out and about to shop or visit the banks, Post Office or Library, there is a risk of isolation and loneliness, no matter what the age group.
  • The potential to limit the life chances of younger people because they can’t access the education or work opportunities they need is an outcome none of us want.
  • Combined with above average housing costs, it’s easy to see why younger families often don’t find it easy to stay here and contribute to a community that they themselves may have grown up in.
  • There is a knock-on effect for employers and their staff if connections in and out of Masham are limited. And all the businesses in Masham have found recruitment challenging.
  • With a lack of evening transport, there are obvious risks for young people getting home after a night out.

So What Can We Do?

We already assist our community, advising on bus services & schedules, promoting the Liftshare scheme, recruiting drivers for the Local Volunteer Drivers Scheme and lobbying for improved transport options in our area.

Now we are actively exploring what more we can do. With the support of our Local Councillor, Felicity Cunliffe-Lister, and other partners in the local area, we are making the improvement of transport options a priority. But remember we are just a small independent charity – our efforts are at a “grassroots” level and we have to work out how to make it viable, fund it and make it affordable and accessible. We will need all the help we can get!
