A major step forward for accessibility in Nidderdale has been achieved thanks to the Access for All project — a partnership between Nidderdale National Landscape and Harrogate-based charity Open Country, funded by DEFRA.
Key highlights
- £83,000 invested to make Nidderdale’s countryside more accessible for people with disabilities.
- 12 practical improvements: paths resurfaced and cleared, barriers removed, and accessible picnic tables added at key sites.
- New Breakfree Pack: Free, detailed guides for accessible walks and trails — available online or by request.
- 12 new audio walks and videos — bringing trails to life for people at home or planning ahead. Working with Experience Community, access videos have been produced for Swinsty and Fewston Reservoirs and Fountains Earth Moor.
- New equipment: three manual wheelchairs and two off-road power chairs for visitors to use this summer.
- Yorkshire Water sites upgraded, including accessible paths, benches, and picnic tables at local reservoirs.
- Training provided to help make countryside access more inclusive long-term.
Why it matters
More residents and visitors, whatever their mobility, can now enjoy Nidderdale’s stunning landscapes.
Open Country supports over 500 members with disabilities to get out into nature.
Volunteers have helped create accessible paths at places like Fishpond Woods and Brimham Rocks.
